As True as Love can Be (Chapter Six)

She was there all alone by herself. The surrounding was cosy. The dark light, the cool air-conditioned air, the soft couch, the glass of ‘Fiery’ and the soft jazz music. She was in a small bar called “Forgotten”. A lady, dressed in dull violet, walked over to Destiny. “You want me to fill that up for you?”

“Anything stronger than ‘Fiery’? I hope one day I can truly taste your ‘Forgotten’. Really. I hope I can forget.”

To forget is good thing. Yet, it will mean robbing you of the last vestige of reality.”

Destiny stood up. “I’m leaving.”

“So fast? I guess you have more important things to do.”

Destiny left the bar.

Another man in grey entered the bar.

The lady looked up. Tears welled up her eyes.

You are finally back. Come try my soup. I hope it’s still the same.”

“My lady, you have aged, yet your grace still shines. Many have turned to your soup just to plain forget about their mortal lives. I too hope of it, yet, I am no mortal.”

She handed him a bowl. In it, a soup of white and black filled the container.

She stared longingly at him and said, “Please tell me of the story how it all started? Please. For so long I have tried to remember. I can’t. My memory is short. I only remember some, yet the rest I have no recollection. Please, tell me of my origins. I know only you can do it.”

The man emptied the soup. He licked his lips. “Your soup is still as wondrous as the time I first taste it.”

He placed the bowl onto the table. He began, “The Creator came up with The Experiment. He filled the Experiment with his angels and helpers. The Creator bring forth plants, animals, soil, sky, and everything else and most of all, the centre of the Experiment, Humans. The Creator wanted to know what happened if Humans are given Free Will.

What is Free Will? Look around you, all these are result of Free Will. As for the angels and helpers, we are tasked to facilitate the Experiment. Each given responsibilities and each given a role.

Yet, Free Will is like fire to humans. A double-edged sword. The Creator tried to control the people, through death, earthquakes and many other disasters. Through the use of religion. Through the use of bonds and relationships. It worked for many eras. Yet, the death bell of the Experiment tolled when some of the angels and helpers rebelled. They resented that humans got the gift of Free Will. The Creator aborted the Experiment and We left the Experiment. Many others like yourself did not leave.

Your name is Snanous, Lady of the Bygone Memories. Your role is to help the mortals to forget and to relieve them of the pain and sufferings of their memories. Some people, especially of the Chinese tribe called you, Meng-po, a grandmother figure feeding your soup to the restless souls to aid them to forget their mortal lives and to start anew. Some other people, like the Greek tribe, called you Amnesia, lesser sister of Mnemosyne.”

“I remember now. I finally remember why I am here.”

“Snanous, I hope you can keep my visit a secret.”

“Life, you can be assured of that. I forget all our conversation in a short while time. Meanwhile, while I still remember you, here’s a toast of our Creator and to the Experiment.”

Chapter Six: Do I Really Love You?

The thought haunted Sahx for many days. She looked at Cedric. The process they were going through was under-rated. No dramatic effects, no donation of hearts, no snow, no nothing. In fact, she doubted that this was even Love.

Cedric did not expect things to turn out this way too. At one point in time, he did felt something for Sahx. He attributed it to Fate. Yet, his world swirled violently. A couple of weeks later, he realized that he did not like Sahx as a girlfriend. It came and it went. Maybe it was just sympathy.

He recalled silently in his heart, that evening she ran out of the restaurant, crying. He had to chase after her, just doing what he should do as friend. She cried and sobbed, in of it all, she told him that she was dumped or maybe even doped. His heart pained for her.

Cedric knew this had to stop, but Sahx was so into it. Cedric needed to tell it to her. To tell her that he does not like her. It should be easy. Just say it and wait for her reaction. This was the part that worried Cedric. Her reaction? What kind of reaction would she have? Suicide is certainly not on the list, he prayed.

Sahx tried to narrow their distance. Cedric moved even farther away.

On Monday
, she tried to talk to him. Cedric continued immersing in a chat with his best buddy Benny. She waited politely by the side. Cedric pulled Benny and continued chatting and walking away from Sahx. She stood there stunned. Her heart pained.

That night, Sahx called Benny up.

“What’s up Sister?” Benny answered.

“Benny, I’ve got something to ask you.”

“It must be Cedric right, Sister. Man ar, I tell you, they can be absolutely horrid. You hang on for awhile. I can’t really speak now. I am doing a mask treatment.”

Sahx waited. She was amused. She knew Benny to be effeminate and saw a lady in a guy’s body in him. She treated him more like a fellow female than a guy-friend. Benny always advised her on make-up, facials, dressings, and a hundred other girls’ grooming stuff. Too bad, there are things she does not dare to confide into him. Benny was a bimbo, a true blue bimbo that vocalizes secrets. There is no secrets safe with him. However she was at her wits end. She needed someone to be there for her.

“Yo, Sister. I’m back. You should really try the SK-two mask. They are really revitalizing. I can feel my skin getting supple and whiter. I know my skin is white, but no harm getting it whiter right. Maybe I can become an Ang-Mo. Do modeling. Sashay flamboyantly on the runway. You know something. Today I saw the biggest bitch with such thick foundation. Oh, come on. It is so obvious. And you know what, I saw that bitch flirting with those guys from the canoe team. What a bimbo. I can never stand her. And her friends, Audrey and Andrea, are so stuck up. Have you ever seen such arrogant bitches? Their attitudes, Sister make my words, will get them tougher attitude from the outside world. Chey! I am so suay to be in the same school as them. But seriously Sister, I must tell you. The thing I really cannot stand them is that they are carrying the latest Prada bags. The Big Plaquette series. Erggg. BITCHES.”

“Benny, actually I called to ask you something. But never mind. Bye.” Sahx hung up the phone. She was really worried that Benny would go around telling other people.

On Tuesday, she messaged Cedric to meet up for lunch. He never showed up. He never replied.

On Wednesday, she stopped Cedric. “Cedric, can we have lunch together?”

“Err, I have a project meeting later. I am in a hurry. Bye.” He hurriedly walked off.

On Thursday, she passed Cedric a letter. The letter was long but simple. It simply asked Cedric if there was anything wrong with them. For that matter, is there anything wrong with her. Cedric wanted to reply but found no courage to do so. Benny was against it. He reprimanded Cedric. If Cedric had no interest in Sahx, he should make it clear to Sahx.

On Friday, Sahx asked Cedric to watch “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”. She bought the tickets beforehand, as if, she knew of the ironical ending. Cedric never came. Instead, Benny turned up. “Sister, there is something I that I want to tell you. Girls talk. Shall we go somewhere?”

“You want to watch the movie? I’ve spent 19 dollars on it. It’s a waste if I never see it.”
“Sister, there is a more serious problem ahead. Come, let’s go to Starbucks.”

Benny walked away. Sahx followed. She knew the conclusion one week ago. Cedric was avoiding, but she lied to herself, believing that Cedric really was busy. She chose to ignore.

They entered Starbucks.

Cedric was at one corner waiting. Benny led Sahx to him. “Brother, I hope you can settle this issue once and for all. I cannot stand you being so depress.” And Benny turned to Sahx, “And Sister, as for you. We are now adults. Don’t be childish. Settle all this like an adult. Get me?” And to the both of them, “I’m leaving for my hair-do session. I hope you two will start afresh, together or separate, just like my hair in a few hours time. See ya people.” Benny left.

Sahx sat silently across Cedric.

Cedric stared innocently onto his cup of coffee.

Sahx moved her body forth, “Cedric, do you love me?”

Cedric shook his head. He felt bad.

“Cedric, have you in any point in time ever like me?”

Cedric felt a rush of blood to his face. He really felt bad, but he shook his head.

“Why then do you go out with me?” Sahx was surprising calm.

Cedric wanted to yell “Sympathy!” but he cannot bring himself to do so. He merely shook his head.

Sahx stood up. She turned. She shuffled gingerly towards to exit. Tears started flowing. She tried controlling. She left the place, heartbroken.

Her love world languished.

Her characters from her little world sang an eulogy to her love life. The male leads are holding out their hands, asking Sahx to hold onto them. Sahx refused. She yelled them away.

The male leads held out their hearts, wanting to give to Sahx to fill her void. She screamed them away.

The male leads promised Sahx a lot of things. Sahx heard words like ‘to the world’s end’, ‘I’ll never leave you’ and ‘I love you’. She lambasted them.

Meanwhile, on-lookers stared curiously at Sahx. Her screaming brought to her un-necessary attention. She knelt on the ground. She stared angrily back at those on-lookers. The people soon went their way.

A man in grey suit appeared. He advanced towards Sahx. “Ah, it seems they have done you wrong. Life as it is, life as it is. Your life is not meant to be like this.” He reached out his hand. Sahx fainted.

(Disclaimer: This is purely a work of fiction. Any resemblance to anyone or anything dead or alive is really a freak coincidence. STAY TUNE FOR THE FINAL EPISODE! Who is the man in grey? Is he good or is he evil? Is everything going to turn out alright? Stay tune just stay tune.

“Thank you Brother. Thank you.”

“Life is meant to be like that, Sister. Fiddling with it will cause only cause unhappiness. Sister, I see the goodness in you, yet, put it good use. I sense a change in the wind. An omen lingers precariously, yet I must leave. The Creator needs me.”)
